TechCrunch is reporting that Atoms, the company being built by Travis Kalanick following his departure from Uber, may be positioning itself to enter the robotaxi market. Kalanick has reportedly described the venture as an opportunity to complete what he calls "unfinished business," a phrase that points unmistakably back to the ride-hailing wars he helped ignite more than a decade ago.
To understand why that framing carries weight, it helps to remember what Kalanick lost, and how he lost it. He co-founded Uber and turned it into one of the most disruptive and controversial technology companies in modern history, reshaping urban transportation in city after city before a cascade of internal scandals and a boardroom revolt forced him out in 2017. By the time he left, Uber was already spending heavily on autonomous vehicle research, treating self-driving technology as the logical and necessary endpoint of its business model — the moment when the cost of the human driver could be eliminated entirely and the economics of ride-hailing would finally work at scale. Kalanick never got to see that vision through. Uber eventually sold its autonomous vehicle unit, Uber ATG, to Aurora in 2020, stepping back from the full-stack self-driving ambition it had once pursued with enormous aggression.
That retreat left a gap in the narrative Kalanick had been building for himself, and the "unfinished business" language suggests he sees Atoms as the vehicle for closing it. The robotaxi space he would be entering is dramatically different from the one Uber was navigating when he ran the company. Waymo, which has been developing autonomous ride-hailing longer than almost anyone, now operates commercially in several American cities and is widely considered the field's most mature player. Tesla has made sweeping claims about its own robotaxi ambitions, with Elon Musk repeatedly promising a fully autonomous ride-hailing network built on the company's existing fleet. Chinese competitors including Baidu's Apollo Go division are operating at meaningful scale in their home market. The competitive landscape, in other words, is no longer a speculative frontier — it is a crowded and expensive arena where the early entrants have years of data and regulatory relationships that a newcomer would need to work hard to close.
What Kalanick would bring is less technological and more structural. His legacy at Uber was not engineering but market expansion, regulatory navigation of the most aggressive kind, and an almost pathological willingness to move into cities before the legal framework had caught up. That playbook is harder to run in autonomous vehicles than it was in human-driven ride-hailing, because the liability and safety questions attached to a driverless car are of a fundamentally different order than those attached to a gig worker with a smartphone. Regulators have spent years building frameworks precisely because they watched what happened when Uber moved first and asked permission later. The likely reading is that any robotaxi operation from Atoms would still need to operate within a far more constrained regulatory environment than the one Kalanick famously exploited.
The consequences of this move, if it materializes, would fall unevenly across the industry. For Uber itself, the symbolism would be sharp — its ousted founder returning to compete in the market Uber abandoned. For investors currently evaluating the robotaxi space, Kalanick's involvement would function as a signal of continued private capital interest in a sector that has absorbed extraordinary amounts of money without yet producing clear profitability at scale. For the established players, particularly Waymo, a new entrant backed by a founder with Kalanick's network and appetite for disruption is unlikely to represent an immediate technical threat but could complicate the regulatory and public-relations environment in cities where autonomous vehicles are still negotiating their terms of operation.
There is also a question of what Atoms actually is at this stage. The company appears to be in early formation, and the gap between a founder's stated ambition and a functioning fleet of robotaxis is not a small one. The capital requirements for this industry are severe, the technical challenges remain genuinely hard, and the timeline between announcement and commercial operation has historically been much longer than even cautious projections suggested. Kalanick is a proven fundraiser and a skilled narrator of his own ambitions, but the robotaxi graveyard contains well-funded companies whose stories were also compelling.
What to watch for next is whether Atoms begins disclosing partnerships with automotive manufacturers or autonomous technology providers, which would indicate whether Kalanick intends to build capability from scratch or assemble it from existing components. The regulatory filings Atoms makes in specific cities will also be an early indicator of geographic strategy. And the roster of investors who back the first significant funding round will say a great deal about how seriously the people closest to the industry take the "unfinished business" pitch.
