Nintendo has released curated classic libraries through services like Nintendo Switch Online, but the selection is limited, the save infrastructure is controlled by Nintendo rather than the player, and crucially, the original cartridge saves — the specific playthroughs, the caught Pokémon, the high scores — are not transferable. That gap between what the platform holder offers and what the player actually wants to preserve is precisely the space these third-party USB-C devices are moving into.

What to watch for next is whether Nintendo responds to the category's growing visibility, either through enforcement action or, more interestingly, through some form of official preservation tooling of its own.
