The second trend is the accelerating push by the technology industry to position AI not merely as a productivity tool but as an infrastructural layer beneath everyday life. Education has always been one of the most alluring targets for that ambition, because the potential market is enormous and because the emotional stakes — parents want the best for their children — make buyers unusually motivated.

What makes the current moment distinct is the maturity of the underlying technology. Earlier generations of edtech promised transformation and largely delivered glorified worksheets. Large language models represent something qualitatively different: systems capable of conducting extended, adaptive, seemingly personalized dialogue on almost any subject. Whether that capability translates into genuine learning outcomes is a separate and largely unanswered question, but the surface experience is compelling enough to make a convincing sales pitch to parents who have already decided that conventional schooling is failing their children.

The skepticism The Verge flags in the broader public is not trivial. Trust in AI remains low across most demographic groups, and incidents that expose the technology's unreliability — the publication notes an example involving AI confidently giving wrong information about something as mundane as safe pizza toppings — have accumulated steadily since generative AI entered mainstream consciousness. And yet wealthy early adopters have historically been insulated from that uncertainty by their ability to treat new technology as an experiment rather than a commitment. If an AI tutoring platform proves inadequate, a family with substantial resources can pivot quickly — back to a private school, toward a human tutor, toward some other emerging option. That optionality changes the risk calculation entirely. The families currently exploring AI education are not, in most cases, betting everything on the technology. They are running a well-resourced trial.

The consequences of this divide deserve serious attention. If AI-assisted education develops a track record among wealthy early adopters, it will likely follow the same path as other innovations that began as luxury experiments before scaling downward through the income distribution. That trajectory is not inherently bad — many technologies have democratized in genuinely useful ways — but in education the risks of an uneven rollout are acute. If AI tutoring becomes refined through the experiences of children whose families can afford to course-correct when things go wrong, the version that eventually reaches less affluent students may arrive carrying assumptions and gaps that were never visible to the people who built it.

There is also a regulatory vacuum worth noting. Traditional private schools, however unconventional, operate within frameworks of accreditation, curriculum standards, and child welfare oversight. It is not yet clear how AI-centered education models map onto those frameworks, or whether the existing frameworks are adequate to address them. The likely reading is that legislators and regulators are substantially behind where the market already is, which is a familiar condition in technology but an especially fraught one when the subjects are minors.

For the companies involved, the strategic logic is straightforward. Wealthy early adopters provide both revenue and credibility. A product used by affluent, well-connected families generates word-of-mouth and signals legitimacy in a way that purely institutional contracts do not.

The things worth watching closely in the period ahead include whether any rigorous academic assessment of AI tutoring outcomes emerges, since the field currently operates largely on testimonials and promise rather than data. Equally important will be how school accreditation bodies and state education authorities respond as these programs grow — whether they move to integrate, regulate, or simply ignore them. And the behavior of the technology companies building these platforms will itself be telling: the degree to which they pursue transparency about their methods and limitations will say a great deal about whether they believe the product works or simply that it sells.
