Russia Chose 'Easter Escalation' Over Ceasefire, Says Zelensky
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of deliberately choosing to escalate its military assault during the Easter period, rejecting any prospect of a ceasefire as the two nations remain locked in a prolonged and devastating conflict.
The overnight assault saw Russia launch hundreds of drones and missiles at Ukraine, killing at least six civilians and wounding 40 others. The scale of the attack drew immediate condemnation from Kyiv, with Zelensky framing the strikes as a conscious decision by Moscow to intensify violence during one of the most sacred periods in the Christian calendar.
Easter holds deep religious and cultural significance across both Ukraine and Russia, where the Orthodox Christian faith is widely observed. The timing of the attack has further inflamed tensions and added a deeply symbolic dimension to Zelensky's criticism of Russian leadership.
The assault is the latest in a long series of large-scale aerial bombardments that Russia has carried out against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure throughout the course of the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukraine has repeatedly called for international support in bolstering its air defenses against such attacks.
Calls for a temporary ceasefire during the Easter holiday had been circulating in diplomatic circles, with hopes that both sides might observe a pause in hostilities. Russia's decision to press forward with the strikes appeared to extinguish those hopes entirely.
The death toll and injuries from the latest barrage add to the enormous human cost of a conflict that has displaced millions of Ukrainians and claimed countless lives on both sides. International leaders have continued to urge a diplomatic resolution, though a lasting peace agreement remains elusive.
Zelensky's statement signals that Ukraine views the Easter attack not merely as a military operation but as a deliberate political message from the Kremlin, one that he suggests reflects Russia's true intentions regarding any potential path toward peace.
