Meta has unveiled an AI assistant called Muse, and the early reception is complicated. The Verge has flagged the product as effective but unsettling — and notably, the source of that unease turns out to be more nuanced than a simple privacy alarm.
To understand why Muse lands the way it does, it helps to understand where Meta is coming from as an AI competitor. The company has spent the better part of two years trying to establish its large language model family, Llama, as a credible alternative to OpenAI and Google's offerings. It has pushed hard on openness, on integration across its social platforms, and on the idea that an AI assistant woven into everyday life is more useful than one sitting behind a chat interface. Muse appears to be the fullest expression of that philosophy yet — an assistant that does not wait to be asked but instead reaches into the fabric of a user's digital life to become genuinely useful.
That is precisely where the creepiness enters. According to The Verge's coverage, the Mac application can access Messages, Calendar, and Notes. That is a significant surface area.
