Bluesky emerged from a Twitter-incubated initiative and launched as a decentralized alternative to mainstream social platforms, positioning itself as a home for users who wanted more control over their experience and less dependence on corporate algorithmic curation. Its underlying protocol, atproto, is the technical architecture that makes the platform federated and theoretically open — meaning developers and third parties can build on top of it rather than being locked into whatever Bluesky itself chooses to offer.
